Away from it all picnic locations

Mallorca is so much more than the beach. The countryside is diverse ranging from high mountains to marshlands and open countryside. Set within the varied landscape are many features, buildings and sights that are just a little bit off the beaten track. In this article we pick our favourites.

The Weather Station

On the road to Formentor beach, there is a viewing point with a car park. As to approach the car park from Puerto Pollenca, there is a turning to the right. If you follow this road to the end there are a few parking spots. There is a weather station to the left, but straight ahead are some unused concrete structures. Around them are several nice spots to have a picnic and the view has to be seen to be believed. Below you are the azure waters of Formentor and in the distance to can see across both Pollenca and Alcudia bays all the way to Sant Pere on the distant headland.

Mortitx Vineyard

Following the mountain road from Pollenca towards Lluc you will come across the Mortitx Vineyards. Not only does the vineyard produce some excellent wines, but it is also the start of a beautiful walk towards the west coast. As you follow the path along, you can pick a spot besides the vineyard and enjoy your picnic in the cool mountain air. It is best not to follow the trail further than the vineyards without proper equipment and a guide.

Gorg Blau Reservoir

High in the Serra de Tramontana the blue-green water of the Gorg Blau reservoir makes a scenic place spread out a blanket and enjoy your sandwiches after a morning walking in the mountains. The reservoir is dangerous, and swimming is prohibited, but the views of the surrounding mountains are stunning. The mountain air offers respite from the summer heat and the drive there is spectacular.

Ses Fontes Ufanes

Ses Fonts Ufanes is a natural spring which offers a unique picnic spot with a peaceful atmosphere. It is located close to the Caves at Campanet which are also worth visiting. For the springs you need to park in the cave parking area. At certain times of year the spring produces a substantial flow of water, but it is a quiet shady spot all year round and ideal for a picnic away from the crowds.

Parc De Albufera

This protected wetland is an excellent spot for birdwatching and a peaceful picnic. It is located just behind Playa De Muro beach. Within the parc there are numerous easy walking trails and even bird hides. There are lots of shady places to picnic and you may even see a pine martin or flamingo.
